PARIS/LONDON/OTTAWA – The governments of France, the UK and Canada have said they will do what’s morally right and recognize Palestine’s right to exist as a nation as early as September, providing some resemblance of it still exists by then.
“We believe Palestine has a right to exist, and we will recognize this and work towards helping them set up the necessary systems to have a functioning state in 31 days… by which time we certainly hope it still exists” said the statement from the three countries.
This announcement (or plan to make an announcement) comes as food experts warn of the ‘famine scenario’ playing out in Gaza and violent Israeli settlers continuing to steal Palestinian land and homes in the West Bank. A fact that Carney and Starmer are particularly sensitive to.
“As the prime ministers of a country that sells arms to Israel, we realized we could do something. And that something is to recognize a Palestinian state provided certain conditions are met in thirty days while continuing to sell arms to Israel.”
“Does this announcement incentivize Israel to go nuts and complete its genocide in the next thirty days? Well I guess time will tell.”
Critics are calling this move “really slow” and have asked the governments to provide more details about how recognizing Palestine as a state could get people food and end the genocide. In response, Carney said they’ll come up with a plan once they get a chance to look over what remains of the Gaza strip and its people in September.
“There’s a chance we could impose economic sanctions on Israel, but I am hesitant to come out now and say that because it might cause uncertainty in the region and I’d hate to have that on my conscience.”
