EDMONTON – In the wake of the Oilers loss last night, which has put them on the wrong side of a 3-1 series lead, Oilers fans are furious that the referees called Anaheim’s OT winner a goal, despite the fact that they admit it was a goal.
“Is the puck all the way across the line? Sure. Almost certainly,” said Spittin’ Chiclets host Ryan Whitney. “But the refs should never have been able to call it a goal based on their positions on the ice. The fact they ended up getting it right is actually meaningless if you think about it.”
“It’s this kind of biased, anti-Oilers, completely accurate refereeing that is the reason we haven’t won a Cup in the McDavid era, and certainly not the fact that our team’s management is apparently allergic to acquiring decent goaltenders.”
The fact that a referee called it a goal on the ice despite his position along the goal line staring directly at the net making it impossible to tell whether the puck went in has incensed Oilers fans. They believe that if the call on the ice was no-goal then it would have been impossible to overturn due to Jarry’s skate obscuring the position of the puck, despite the fact that everyone can still see where the puck is.
“They understand that we know how big pucks are right? So if we can see where the bottom of the puck is we know where the top is even if we can’t see it,” said one neutral fan. “Like if Jarry’s skate was hitting the back of the net with the puck under it would they still claim there was no proof it was in?”
Some Oilers fans have labelled the decision the worst call in the history of the NHL playoffs, a statement that will certainly not make them look like absolute fools for years to come.
