Police remind parents to always lock car doors when leaving small children in subzero weather

MONTREAL – Local police are warning parents of the dangers of leaving their children in the car in -33 degree weather without ensuring they have safely secured the doors.

“There are many dangers of leaving your children in the car without properly locking your little angels in there good and tight,” advises police chief Marc Parent. “We understand they can be ear piercingly annoying when shopping. But the last thing you need is a homeless guy in there snacking on their cheese strings, drinking their juice boxes and colouring with them when you return. Trust me, once he’s in there it’s hard to get him out.”

Parent warns that locking the doors might not be enough to ensure your children’s safety while unattended.

“In these sub-zero temperatures kids can get restless in there, so please don’t be a fool and forget the child safety lock,” Parent cautioned wagging his finger. “Far too often children seem to get so cold they unlock the doors themselves and walk around the malls. Once in there they are only under the purview of mall cops. Mall cops. Need I say more?”

Parent also made a point of reminding parents that regular leaving-child-in-car safety procedures still apply, “And as always remember, if there is a dog in the car, roll down the window at least half an inch.”
