Doug Ford continues to push ahead with plans to dig a 19.5 metre wide, multi-story tunnel under the 401 in order to solve the issue of traffic congestion once and for all. Here are some of the pros and cons of such a move.
Pro: It will make driving from Brampton to Scarborough feel 0.0000005% more like driving from London to Paris than it currently does
Con: With feasibility studies, environmental analyses, the bidding process and other delays it will be over a decade until Ford’s developer buddies get rich off this
Pro: Experts predict the transit portion of the tunnel could still be completed before the Eglinton LRT
Con: Costs could run between $250 million to $1 billion per kilometre, which is more than the cost of every bike lane built around the world combined
Pro: Academics explaining the concept of induced demand will have a great visual to use in their Powerpoints
Con: We’re not experts but it seems like building a big ass tunnel under it might make require a few lane closures on the 401 during the construction process
Pro: It’ll be a great place to hide the body of any judge that rules Ford’s actions unconstitutional
Con: If you thought being stuck in traffic is bad now, try doing it while hearing the screams of someone having a claustrophobia induced panic attack
