Local teen takes a stand against ageism by not offering 83 year-old seat on bus

MONTREAL – Public transit officials are congratulating 16-year-old Harrison Grady for standing up against age discrimination by not giving up his seat to octogenarian Edith Perkins when she hobbled onto the crowded 211 bus.

“His courage and bold action in the face of hegemonic social inequalities like the overt prevalence of ageism deserves the highest of public transit honors,” announced Michel Labrecque, chair of the local transit authority. “It is with this in mind that we proudly award Mr. Harrison Grady the city’s highest award for anti-discrimination public transit activism.”

Grady is overwhelmed with the reaction he has been shown for his activism.

“I was just trying to get home from school and she came up to me filled with her privilege and expectations and I just had enough of old biddies pushing their way into teenagers seats,” said a noble Grady. “Sometimes you have to stand up for what’s right by sitting down. Like Rosa Parks, I’m tired of being treated as a second-class citizen.”

Edith Perkins was too exhausted and sore after standing for the hour-long bus ride to comment or congratulate Grady on his award.
