OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has announced that he is suspending all of his MPs as a precaution in the event that more members of his caucus are accused of harassment or other forms of misconduct.
After the NDP’s Erin Weir was expelled from the party for criticizing the investigation into harassment claims made against him, and Christine Moore, the MP who sparked the investigation into Weir, was suspended for allegedly sexually exploiting a wounded veteran with her powers as an MP, Singh said he will take no further risks with the other 42 members of his team.
“We take all allegations and investigations very, very seriously,” Singh explained outside of the House of Commons. “And unlike other parties who are facing similar misconduct allegations among their MPs, we’re taking this to a whole new level of precaution.”
The investigation into all of the NDP’s parliamentarians is expected to take 11 years and, until they’re all cleared, will not serve as critics, committee members, or be allowed within 50 meters of each other.
Interviews with all 3,787,309 members of the public who have interacted with NDP MPs over the past twenty years have already begun.
As an additional safeguard, Singh said that he will suspend himself as leader and would not comment any further as to not bias the third party investigation.
