Friend who FaceTimed you with no warning text jailed

TORONTO – Toronto man Pat Kelly was jailed on Monday after attempting to a close friend without first sending a courteous “I’m going to FaceTime you” text.

The abrasive call came in around 6:30 pm, describes a friend of Kelly’s: “I felt attacked. At first I thought it must be a mistake—a butt dial, but when he tried again less than a minute later I did not hesitate to contact the authorities.”

As a channel of communication, FaceTime has historically been reserved for overseas greetings and strained group family well-wishes at holidays. It is primarily the unintended result of trying to call a person the regular way. Federal lawmakers have been urging iPhone users to exercise caution when engaging their friends in spontaneous video chats as it’s uncomfortable, unnecessary, and a felony.

Reached for comment behind bars, a distressed Kelly explained: “I thought it would be a fun surprise. I was walking by a cool fountain. Now I know I hurt someone. Pretty badly. And I need to reckon with that.”
