MONTREAL – A Quebec prison now showcases a basketball team exclusively made up of former municipal and provincial politicians within the penitentiary’s sports league.
While the squad started their season 0-10, the team know as the ‘Kickbacks’ are expected to improve their overall game with the expected arrival of point guard and former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum.
“He’s going to try to fill the shoes of [former Lt. Governor] Lise Thibault,” explained Coach and former Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, who is serving 6 months for fraud and breach of trust. “And [former Boisbriand mayor] Robert Poirier has really proven himself with the rebounds we’ve been getting lately, but we always collapse in the last quarter. That’s mostly because we’re brutally beaten by our opponents.”
Hopes for the new team look good with prospects like former deputy premier Nathalie Normandeau, former Gaspé mayor François Roussy, PQ staffer Ernest Murray, and former Liberal provincial cabinet minister Marc-Yvan Coté.
The Kickbacks are expected to face the Hell’s Angels team tomorrow, which Coach Vaillancourt plans on playing zone defence to make up for the team’s lack of speed and reduce the risk of being shanked.
