CALGARY – A jaywalker was hit by a school bus while trying to cross the street this morning in an incident described by onlookers as tragicomic.

Witnesses say the jaywalker, 23-year-old Megan Shemluck, was crossing the street humourously when she noticed the bus heading her way.

“I saw her trotting and started laughing,” said Tim Washburn, a friend of Shemluck. “I wanted to warn her about the bus, but I was just laughing too much. Then, when she noticed the bus, her trotting just got funnier.”

Added Washburn: “I was laughing so hard I thought I was gonna die.”

Washburn described Shemluck’s trot as a light hop, and he stressed the fact that she held her hands up high in the air, with “loose” wrists, while jaywalking.

Continued Washburn: “When she noticed the bus her trot got more frantic, and frenzied, like she
was afraid for her life or something. Her hands were flailing everywhere.”

“Oh man,” he continued. “It was hilarious!”

Though Washburn was highly entertained by the incident, he agrees that it was no longer funny once Shemluck was hit by the bus. “Yes, I was laughing a lot,” a now serious Washburn explained. “But when she got smacked by the bus, I realized the joke was pretty much over.”
